Why a spoken journal
Many learners read and listen far more than they speak, because speaking usually needs another person. A spoken journal gives you daily practice with no audience and no pressure. It also shows you exactly which words you reach for and can't find.
What to talk about at each level
| Level | Topics | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | What you ate, the weather, three things you did today | 1 minute |
| Intermediate | Tell a story from your week, describe a person, explain a plan | 2 to 3 minutes |
| Advanced | Give an opinion and argue the other side, retell a news story, describe a memory in detail | 5 minutes |
A daily routine
- Pick a topic before you start
- Talk for two minutes without stopping to look things up
- Read the transcript and mark three gaps: words you didn't know or phrases you avoided
- Look those up
- Record a short second entry using them
Use the transcript as a rough mirror
If the transcript shows a different word than the one you meant, the speech model may have heard something else. Listen to how a native speaker says that word and try again. Take this as a hint, not a verdict. Names, background noise and fast speech confuse speech recognition for everyone.
Hear your progress
Once a month, talk about the same topic you chose in your first week, then play the two recordings back to back. Progress in a language is slow day to day and obvious over months, and the recordings make it audible.
A language journal in Dawn Light
In Settings, under Recording, choose the language you're learning in the Language picker. The first recording in a new language downloads Apple's speech model once. Switch back to your own language when you want to journal in it. Turn on Keep recordings so every entry has your voice, and tag entries by language. On this day brings back what you said a year ago, in last year's accent.
Questions about language learning journals
Which languages can I practice?
In Dawn Light, any language your device's speech model supports. The app's own screens are in English, and summaries work in the languages Apple Intelligence supports.
Can I mix two languages in one entry?
It's better to keep to one. The speech model listens for the language you chose, so words in another language may come out wrong.
Does this replace a teacher?
No. A journal gives you speaking time and a record of your progress. A teacher or conversation partner still gives you feedback a transcript can't.
