What Day One does well

Day One has a decade of updates behind it and runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Android and the web. Its free Basic plan includes unlimited entries and journals on one device. Day One says end-to-end encryption is on by default for new journals, with the key held on your device. It also does things Dawn Light doesn't, such as shared journals and turning a journal into a printed book.

  • Templates, a daily prompt and a prompt library
  • Tags, On This Day, streaks and a map of where you wrote
  • Photos and video, up to 30 per entry with Silver or Gold
  • Export as PDF, JSON, plain text or Markdown, or CSV
  • Email and text entries in, plus Zapier, IFTTT and Strava with Silver or Gold

How voice works in Day One

Recording audio in Day One needs a Silver or Gold subscription, and old recordings stay playable if it lapses. On iOS, transcription is limited to recordings up to 10 minutes and needs an internet connection. Day One uses Apple's speech recognition, which runs on the device on iOS 26 devices with Apple Intelligence and on Apple's servers otherwise.

  • Up to 30 recordings in one entry
  • Recordings without transcription can run up to 3 hours on iOS
  • The transcription language follows your keyboard, then your device language
  • Apple Watch can record, but transcription isn't available from the watch
  • Mac and the web can attach audio files but can't record

How AI works in each app

Day One's AI features are part of Gold. They include Daily Chat, entry highlights, title suggestions, Go Deeper prompts, summaries and image generation. Some run on your device with Apple Intelligence. Others run on Day One's servers or through a provider, which Day One names as OpenAI for features such as Daily Chat. Day One says it doesn't keep AI requests once processed and doesn't train on entries without permission. You can turn the features off in Settings. Dawn Light Plus runs its summaries, weekly recap and Ask on your device with Apple Intelligence, so it needs a supported iPhone or iPad.

Who should pick each one

Day One suits people who want one journal everywhere, including Android or a Windows PC. It also suits anyone who values templates, shared journals, printed books and end-to-end encryption. Dawn Light suits people who would rather talk than type, sometimes for longer than 10 minutes. It works in any language their iPhone can transcribe, with no account.

Moving from Day One to Dawn Light

Day One's JSON export can include your photos and other media. Dawn Light reads that file. Entries keep their dates and photos, Day One tags come across, and importing the same file twice adds nothing the second time.

  1. In Day One, export your journal as JSON and include media
  2. Save the .zip file it makes to Files
  3. In Dawn Light, open Settings and go to Your data
  4. Tap Import from Day One or Apple Journal and choose the .zip file

Questions about Day One and Dawn Light

Does Day One transcribe audio for free?

No. As of October 2026, Day One's plans page lists audio recording and transcription under Silver and Gold. The free Basic plan doesn't include recording. Day One's site and the App Store show current prices.

Do I need an account for Day One?

Day One's FAQ says you need a Day One account to sync between devices, and syncing across devices is part of Silver and Gold. You can sign in with email, Apple or Google. Dawn Light has no account and syncs through your own iCloud.

Will my Day One tags and photos come across to Dawn Light?

Yes. Entries keep their dates and photos, and Day One tags come across. Export with media included so the photos are in the file.
