Where your voice becomes text
This is the first thing to check. Some apps turn speech into text on your phone. Others upload the audio to a server and send the words back. On-device transcription keeps your recordings at home and usually works without a connection once the speech model is on the phone. The app's privacy policy and its App Privacy section on the App Store should say which one it does.
- Does the audio leave the phone to be transcribed?
- Can you record and read entries with no connection?
- Does it work in the language you think in?
Privacy you can check for yourself
A journal holds things you wouldn't say to most people. Look for privacy you can verify, not only promises on a website.
- Account: do you have to sign up, and what does the company keep about you?
- App Privacy label: the App Store lists what data an app collects and links to you
- Ads and tracking: a journal has no reason to need either
- Lock: can you put the journal behind Face ID?
- Sync: if entries go to a cloud, is it your own iCloud or the company's server?
Your words, kept as you said them
Some apps rewrite speech into tidy paragraphs. That can read nicely, but it isn't quite what you said, and years later the exact words are often what you want back. Look for an app that keeps the full transcript untouched and puts any summary beside it. Being able to keep the audio too is a bonus, because a voice carries things text drops.
Getting entries out and finding them again
A journal is meant to last longer than any one app. Check that you can export everything in formats other apps and people can open, such as plain text or PDF, with the audio and photos. Check that search covers every word you said, not only titles. If you already keep a journal elsewhere, see whether the app can import it.
What's free, and what costs money
Pricing models vary a lot. Some apps cap the number of entries or minutes on the free plan, and some put export or search behind a subscription. Read what the free version does before you build a habit around it. Then ask what happens to your entries if you stop paying.
- Is there a limit on entries, minutes or storage?
- Are search, export and sync free?
- If a subscription ends, do you keep every entry and recording?
Quick to start
The main reason people talk instead of type is speed. In a 2016 lab study on iPhone, English speech input ran at about 153 words a minute against 52 on the keyboard. That gain disappears if starting a recording takes six taps. Look for a way to record from the Lock Screen, Control Center, a button or Siri.

Questions about voice journal apps
Can a voice journal app work without internet?
Yes, if it transcribes on the device. In Dawn Light the first recording in a language downloads Apple's speech model, which needs a connection once. After that, recording and transcripts work with no connection.
Do I have to pay for a voice journal app?
Not necessarily. Dawn Light records and transcribes unlimited entries for free, with search, sync and export included. Plus adds summaries, recaps, Ask and Apple Watch recording. The App Store shows the price for your country.
Can I bring my old journal with me?
Dawn Light imports a .zip export from Day One or Apple Journal. Entries keep their dates and photos, and Day One tags come across.
Does Dawn Light run on Android or Mac?
No. It runs on iPhone with iOS 26 or later and iPad with iPadOS 26 or later. Recording on Apple Watch is part of Plus.
