What you need

A phone and a quiet minute. The tool matters less than having one that saves each entry with its date and turns your voice into text you can search later.

  • Voice Memos: free on iPhone, with transcripts on iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18 or later
  • Apple's Journal app: can record audio inside an entry and transcribe it, in English only
  • A voice journal app: records you, writes down your words and keeps each entry by date

Your first entry, step by step

  1. Pick a moment you already have, such as after brushing your teeth or on the walk home
  2. Find a spot where you can talk without being overheard
  3. Start recording and say the date and where you are
  4. Talk through what happened today, how it felt and what comes next
  5. Stop once you've said one true thing, even if that took a minute
  6. Read the text back once, so you know what the app heard

If you don't know what to say

Blank moments are normal in the first week. Start with one of these and keep going until you run out.

  • The thing I keep thinking about today is...
  • One small good thing today was...
  • Right now I feel... because...
  • Tomorrow I want to remember to...

Make talking to yourself feel less strange

Most people feel awkward for the first few entries. It helps to picture a listener, such as a friend you're leaving a voice message for, or yourself a year from now. Pauses, ums and half sentences are fine. Nobody is grading this, and you can whisper.

Read it back after a week

The value of a journal shows up when you look back. After seven days, read or listen to your entries in one sitting. You'll notice small details you had already forgotten, and maybe a worry that came up three times. That's usually enough to keep going.

Starting a voice journal in Dawn Light

Tap the sun on Today and talk. Your words appear on the screen as you speak, and Done saves a dated entry. The first recording in a language downloads Apple's speech model once. After that, recording works with no connection. Recording, transcripts and search are free with no limit.

Questions about starting a voice journal

Is a voice journal as good as a written one?

It's different. Talking is faster and closer to how you think, so entries tend to be longer and looser. Writing slows you down, which some people like. Try a week of each and keep the one you actually do.

Should I keep the audio or only the text?

Audio keeps your tone of voice, which can be moving to hear years later. Text is quicker to skim and takes less space. Many apps let you keep both, or only the words.

What if someone might hear me?

Record on a walk, in a parked car or in another room, or speak quietly. On days when talking isn't possible, type a line instead so the habit doesn't break.
