Record a voice memo on Apple Watch
On your iPhone, open Voice Memos and tap Watch Recordings to find them. With Voice Memos turned on in iCloud settings, they also appear on your other devices.
- Open Voice Memos on your Apple Watch
- Tap the Record button and talk
- Tap the Stop Recording button when you're done
Dictate a note on Apple Watch
Notes came to Apple Watch in watchOS 26. It's handy for a line or two in words rather than audio. Notes sync through iCloud, so you can expand them later on your iPhone.
- Ask Siri something like "Start a new note", or open Notes and tap the New Note button
- Dictate your text
- Tap Done to save the note

Keep watch entries short
Thirty seconds to two minutes suits the wrist. Say the main thing and one detail. If there's more to say, add another entry on your phone later. Never record while driving.
Recording on Apple Watch with Dawn Light
With Dawn Light Plus and watchOS 26, open the app on your watch, tap to talk and tap Done. The watch shows Sent to your iPhone, and your iPhone writes down what you said. The entry appears once your iPhone has the recording.

Can I journal on Apple Watch for free?
Yes. Voice Memos and Notes are both free and already on the watch. In Dawn Light, recording on Apple Watch is part of Plus, while recording on iPhone is free.
Where do Apple Watch voice memos go?
To your iPhone, under Watch Recordings in Voice Memos. If Voice Memos is turned on in iCloud settings, they also appear on your other devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
Can I record on my watch while walking?
Yes, and walking is one of the easiest times to talk. Stop somewhere safe if you need to look at the screen.
