Why a walk works for some people
Sitting down to journal can feel like homework. On a walk there's no blank page and nobody watching, and the time is already set aside. Some people find words come more easily when they're moving. Twenty minutes of talking is a long entry, with nothing to write.
A walking entry, step by step
- Start recording before you leave, or at the first quiet corner
- Say where you are and one thing you can see, to get going
- Talk through one question, then follow wherever it leads
- Pause at crossings and busy stretches, then carry on
- Stop and save when you're back at your door
Start without taking out the screen
The less you look at your phone, the better the walk. In Dawn Light you can start a recording from the Action button, a Lock Screen button or Control Center. Or say "Record a Dawn Light entry" to Siri. Then lock your phone and put it away. The recording keeps going, and the Lock Screen shows a timer and a stop button, never your words.
Wind, traffic and noise
- Turn your back to the wind while you talk
- Hold the bottom of the phone, where the microphone is, a little closer to your mouth
- Pause when a bus or a siren goes past rather than talking over it
- Speak a little slower than usual on a busy street
Things to talk about on a walk
Walking lends itself to looking around and looking ahead. Try one of these, out loud.
- Describe what's around you right now, then say what's been on your mind today
- Talk through the one thing you keep putting off, and the first small step
- Tell the story of your day so far as if you were telling a friend
- Say what you'd like the rest of today to look like
- Name something you noticed on this walk that you'd usually miss
Stay safe
Keep your eyes up and your attention on where you're going. If you want to read what you said, stop somewhere safe first. Don't record on a bike or behind the wheel. The entry will wait.
Questions about journaling on a walk
Does the recording stop if I lock my phone?
Not in Dawn Light. The recording keeps going with the phone locked, and you can stop and save it from the Lock Screen.
Do I need a signal?
Not after your first recording. That first time downloads Apple's speech model for your language. After that, recording and transcripts work with no connection.
Can I record from my Apple Watch instead?
With Plus, yes. Open Dawn Light on the watch, tap to talk and tap Done. The watch sends the recording to your iPhone, which writes it down.
Take your journal for a walk
Start a recording from the Action button or Siri, put your phone away and talk. Dawn Light writes down every word on your iPhone and saves it as a dated entry.
