Ways to look back

Pick one or two. Rereading everything at once is tiring and rarely useful.

Questions to ask while you read

  • What did I worry about that never happened?
  • What keeps coming up, month after month?
  • Who shows up often, and how do I sound when I talk about them?
  • What did I want then that I have now?
  • What would I tell the person who said this?

Answer your old self

When something stands out, record a new entry about it. Say the date of the old entry, what you noticed and what's different now. Leave the original as it was. The gap between the two is often the most interesting part of a journal.

When old entries are hard to read

You may meet a version of yourself who was struggling or plainly wrong. That person was doing what they could with what they knew. It's fine to skip an entry or stop for the day. If you're thinking about harming yourself or you're in danger, contact local emergency services or a crisis line now. In the US, call or text 988.

Find things quickly

  • Search for a name or a place rather than scrolling
  • Use tags for recurring themes, such as work, family or health
  • Use a calendar view to jump to a date you remember
  • Say names and places out loud when you record, so search can find them later

Questions about rereading a journal

How often should I reread my journal?

A quick look at this date in past years each day, and a longer reread once a month, suits most people. Find a rhythm that feels useful, not like homework.

Should I edit old entries?

Leave them as they were. Their value is that they show what you thought at the time. Add a new entry if you want to respond.

I'm embarrassed by old entries. Should I delete them?

Wait a while before deciding. Feelings about old entries often soften. If you do delete, keep an export somewhere private first, in case you change your mind.
