The five minutes

Talk it or write it. Out loud, each step is roughly a minute.

A five-minute morning entry
MinuteStepIt might sound like
1How you slept and how you feelWoke at five, foggy, a bit anxious about the review
2What today holdsTwo meetings, school pickup, dinner with Alex
3The one thing that matters mostIf I only finish the budget draft, today was fine
4The loud worryI'm worried the review goes badly. I've prepared, and that's what I control
5One small kindness or pleasure to look forTen minutes outside at lunch

Set it up the night before

  • Decide where you'll sit or stand, so there's nothing to choose in the morning
  • Put your journal where your thumb already goes, such as the dock
  • If you talk, know who else is awake and where you won't be overheard
  • Set a reminder for a few minutes after you usually get up

Short on time? The one-minute version

Some mornings five minutes is too much. Keep the habit with three quick lines and stop.

  1. I feel...
  2. Today, the thing that matters is...
  3. I'm letting go of...

Talking when others are still asleep

A whisper is enough for most phones to pick up. You can also talk on the walk to the bus, in the bathroom with the fan on or in a parked car. On days when none of that works, type the one-minute version.

Look at it again tonight

A morning entry is a small plan. Glancing at it before bed closes the loop. Did the one thing happen? Was the worry as big as it sounded? Over a few weeks you'll learn which morning worries tend to come true and which don't.

Questions about morning journaling

How is this different from morning pages?

Morning pages, from Julia Cameron's book The Artist's Way, are three longhand pages of whatever comes to mind. This routine is shorter and more structured, so it fits a busy morning.

Can I do it on my commute?

Yes, on foot or on public transit. Never journal while driving. If you drive to work, record in the parked car before you head in.

What if I'm not a morning person?

Then journal at night instead. A routine you keep matters more than the time of day.
