Catch it before the day takes over
Dreams tend to slip away once your mind turns to the day ahead. The first minute after waking is the one that counts. Lie still, keep your eyes closed for a moment and replay what you can. Then talk, before you look at anything else on the phone.
What to capture
Get the raw material down first. Meaning can wait.
- Where you were, even if the place made no sense
- Who was there, and who they turned into
- The strongest image, sound or line of dialogue
- What happened, in whatever order it comes back
- How you felt in the dream and how you felt on waking
- Anything from yesterday it reminds you of
A simple morning routine
- Before sleep, put the phone where you can reach it without sitting up
- On waking, stay still and replay the dream for a few breaths
- Talk for one to three minutes, starting with the clearest part
- On mornings with no dream, record one line saying so
- Later in the day, add a tag or a note about what was going on in your life
Dream prompts to say out loud
Use one of these when you remember a dream but don't know where to start.
- Walk me through the place in the dream as if I'm standing in it
- Describe the moment the dream changed direction
- Say what you felt when you woke, before you try to explain it
- Tell what happened in the dream that could never happen awake
- Describe how the dream would have ended if you hadn't woken up
- Name someone in the dream and say what they wanted
Looking back for patterns
Once a month, read your dream entries in one sitting. You may notice a house you keep returning to, a person who shows up in stressful weeks or a feeling that repeats. You don't need a dictionary of symbols. Your own notes about what was happening that week are usually the most useful context.
A dream journal in Dawn Light
Say "Record a Dawn Light entry" to Siri, or use the Record an entry control on the Lock Screen or the Action button. Dawn Light opens straight into a recording. Tag entries "dream" so the Journal tab can show only those. Search finds a word like "stairs" across every dream you've told. With Plus, you can record on Apple Watch without reaching for the phone.
Questions about dream journals
Is it better to write or talk about a dream?
Whichever is faster at the moment you wake. Talking works with your eyes half closed and in the dark, and it's quicker than typing, so less of the dream fades before it's down.
What if I don't remember any dreams?
Record a line anyway, such as "No dream, woke at six, rested". The habit of checking each morning is what you're building. Those short entries still show how you slept.
Do I need to work out what my dreams mean?
No. A dream journal can simply be a record. If you do want to reflect, start with what was going on in your life that week rather than a book of meanings.
