Lock the app with Face ID

iPhone can require Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode to open almost any app. Apple says information inside a locked app also stays out of notification previews, search and Siri suggestions. The lock applies only on that iPhone and doesn't sync through iCloud.

  1. Go to the Home Screen
  2. Touch and hold the journal app until the Quick Actions menu opens
  3. Tap Require Face ID (or Touch ID or Passcode)
  4. Tap Require Face ID again to lock it, or Hide and Require Face ID to also hide it

Questions to ask any journal app

  • Does it need an account, and what does it do with your email?
  • Is your voice turned into text on the device, or sent to a server?
  • Where are entries stored: on the device, in your iCloud or on the company's servers?
  • What does the App Privacy section of its App Store page say?
  • Can you export everything, and delete everything, yourself?

Keep it off the Lock Screen

  • In Settings, under Notifications, set Show Previews to When Unlocked
  • Choose reminders that don't quote your entries
  • Avoid widgets that display entry text on the Home Screen or Lock Screen
  • Use a passcode longer than four digits

If you use Apple's Journal app

Apple's Journal can be locked from inside the app or in Settings under Apps, then Journal, with Lock Journal. Apple says Journal entries aren't included in iCloud backups. They sync through iCloud if you turn that on. To include them in a backup, the iPhone backup has to be encrypted and stored on a computer or an external drive.

Privacy is also where you talk

A voice journal is only as private as the room you record in. Choose a time and place where nobody is listening, such as a walk or a parked car. On days when that isn't possible, type instead.

How Dawn Light keeps entries private

  • Your voice becomes text on your iPhone, and there is no server
  • No account, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. The App Store lists it as Data Not Collected
  • Lock with Face ID is in Settings under Privacy, and the app switcher shows a privacy cover
  • Sync with iCloud is optional and uses your own private iCloud account
  • The daily reminder never shows what you said
  • Delete all data removes everything from the device and iCloud

Questions about a private journal

Is locking the app enough?

It stops someone who picks up your unlocked phone. It doesn't protect against someone who knows your passcode, so keep that private too, and check where the app keeps copies of your entries.

Does Dawn Light send my voice anywhere?

No. Apple's speech model turns your voice into text on your device. If you turn on Sync with iCloud, entries are also kept in your own private iCloud account.

How do I keep a copy of my journal somewhere safe?

Export it to a file you control and store it somewhere private, such as an encrypted drive.
