Capture now, judge later
Ideas arrive at bad times, mid-walk, in the shower or as you fall asleep. If capturing one means finding a pen and a clean page, most of them are gone by the time you're ready. Make capture quick and judge nothing in the moment. Sorting happens later, on your schedule.
What to say with each idea
- The idea in one sentence
- What sparked it: something you saw, read or heard
- Who it's for, or what problem it solves
- The next small step, if there is one
- The question you'd need to answer first
Where ideas show up, and how to catch them
Notice where your ideas tend to come. For many people it's walks, showers, commutes and the edge of sleep. Make sure the journal is one press away in each of those places. If an idea comes while you're driving, hold on to it and record it after you park.
A weekly idea review
- Read or listen to the week's ideas in one sitting
- Drop the ones that no longer interest you
- Join ideas that turn out to be the same idea
- Pick one and record its next step
- Leave the rest. Some ideas need months
Let old ideas meet new ones
The useful moment is often when a new idea connects to one from last spring. Search your journal for a key word before you start on something, and you may find you've been circling the same thought for a while.
An idea journal in Dawn Light
Put Record an entry on the Action button or say "Record a Dawn Light entry" to Siri, and you're talking in a second. Tag entries "ideas" or by project, and Search finds any word you said. With Plus, each idea gets a title and suggested tags. Ask can answer "What ideas did I have for the garden?" with links to the entries. Recording on Apple Watch is part of Plus too.
Questions about idea journals
Why not just use a notes app?
You can. An idea journal adds dates, the context of what sparked each idea and a habit of reviewing them. Talking also captures the half-formed thought before you've worked out how to write it.
How do I catch ideas at night?
Keep the phone within reach and record a few words without turning on the light. Even "bridge idea, the one about the bike lane" is enough to bring it back in the morning.
What if most of my ideas are bad?
That's normal and fine. The weekly review is where you let them go. A few good ones only show up because you kept catching the rest.
Catch the next idea
Press the Action button and say the idea before it slips away. Dawn Light keeps it as a dated entry you can tag and search when you're ready to use it.
