Lower the cost of starting
A blank page asks a lot before you've said anything. You have to find the notebook or app, choose words, spell them and keep your train of thought while your hands catch up. Speaking skips several of those steps, and for some people that's the difference between journaling and not. It's quicker too. In a 2016 lab study on iPhone, English speech input was about three times as fast as typing.
Short and messy entries count
- One minute is a full entry
- Say things in whatever order they come out
- Jump topics mid-sentence if that's where your head goes
- Don't go back and fix anything
- If nothing comes, say three things that happened today
Put the journal where you already are
A new habit sticks more easily when it rides on one you already have. Pick a moment that happens every day anyway, like the walk to the car, brushing your teeth or the kettle boiling. Then make the journal one press away from that moment, on the Lock Screen, a button or the Home Screen.
Missed days are part of it
Streak counters can turn a missed day into a reason to quit. A journal doesn't need to be daily to be useful. If you come back after two weeks, just start talking about today. You don't owe it a catch-up.
Looking back without rereading everything
Long, wandering entries are hard to scan later. Search lets you jump straight to a word or name. Tags let you see one theme at a time, such as work or sleep. Reading only the last week, once a week, is plenty.
Journaling with ADHD in Dawn Light
Put the Record an entry control on the Action button or the Lock Screen, or add the Home Screen widget, and one press opens a recording. There's no account to set up. One optional Daily reminder can nudge you at a time you choose, and it never shows what you said. With Plus, a long ramble is laid out as what happened, how it felt and what's next, while your words stay exactly as you said them.
Questions about journaling with ADHD
Is journaling good for people with ADHD?
Some people find it helps them remember what happened and notice patterns in their days. It's not a substitute for professional care. Try short spoken entries for two weeks and keep what works.
What if I keep forgetting to journal?
Tie it to something you already do every day and set one reminder at that time. When you forget anyway, start again with today. No catch-up needed.
What if I have too many thoughts to start?
Do a brain dump. Talk for two minutes about everything on your mind without sorting it, then stop.
