What fits in one minute
One minute is enough for one moment, told properly. Don't try to cover the whole day.
- Name the moment from today you'd want to keep
- Say why it stuck with you
- Sum up the day in one word
When to fit it in
Attach the minute to something you already do every day, so you don't have to remember it separately.
- While the kettle boils
- Right after brushing your teeth
- On the last stretch of the walk home
- Before you put the phone down for the night
What a year of minutes adds up to
Small entries build a large record. These figures use an unhurried pace of 130 words a minute.
| Period | Minutes | About |
|---|---|---|
| A week | 7 | 910 words |
| A month | 30 | 3,900 words |
| A year | 365 | 47,450 words |
| Five years | 1,825 | 237,250 words |
Keep it from growing into a chore
One minute is the floor, not the ceiling. Talk longer on days with more to say, but don't raise the minimum. A missed day is just a missed day. Start again tomorrow with the next minute.
Looking back
At the end of each month, read or listen to the month's entries. It takes about as long as one longer entry. Once a year, pick your twelve favorite moments and talk about them in one entry.
A one-minute journal in Dawn Light
Add the Home Screen widget or put Record an entry on the Action button, and you're recording in a tap. The timer shows when your minute is up. Today shows your week as a row of small skies, and the Journal calendar puts a small sun under each day you talked. A Daily reminder can nudge you at your chosen time, and On this day shows what you said a year ago.
Questions about one-minute journaling
Is one minute a day enough to be worth it?
Yes. One minute is often enough to bring a day back when you read it later, and a habit you keep beats a longer one you drop.
How many words is one minute of talking?
About 130 words at an unhurried pace and about 150 in everyday conversation.
What if I miss a day?
Skip it and carry on. There's nothing to catch up on, and the record is still yours.
