What to record

Firsts are the obvious part. The everyday details are the ones that vanish.

  • Firsts, with the date: a smile, rolling over, a first food, a first word
  • What an ordinary day looks like right now, from waking to bedtime
  • Funny faces, sounds and habits
  • Who visited and what they said
  • How you're doing, including the long nights

A routine that fits around a baby

You won't have a quiet half hour, so don't plan for one. Talk for a minute while the baby naps on you, on a walk with the stroller or after the bedtime routine. Skipped days are normal. One line after a week off still keeps the thread.

A monthly check-in

On the same date each month, record a longer entry. Over a year, these twelve entries become the backbone of the journal.

  • What they can do now that they couldn't last month
  • What a typical day looks like
  • What they love, and what they protest
  • One thing about this month you want to remember

Keeping it private

A baby can't choose what's shared about them. A private journal lets you keep every detail without posting it anywhere. Later you can decide what to show them, and when.

Looking back

On each birthday, read or listen to the first week and the monthly check-ins. From the second year on, the same date a year earlier is often the most moving thing to read.

A baby journal in Dawn Light

Use the Record an entry control on the Lock Screen or the Action button to start talking one-handed. Add photo puts a picture in the entry, and a tag with your baby's name keeps these entries together on the Journal calendar. With Keep recordings on, any babbling in the background stays with the entry. From next year, On this day shows what you said on this date. With Plus, you can record on Apple Watch while your arms are full.

Questions about baby journals

What do you write in a baby journal?

Firsts with dates, what ordinary days look like, funny moments, visitors and how you're feeling. A monthly check-in on the same date gives the year a shape.

How often should I add to it?

A few times a week is plenty, plus a monthly check-in. Short entries count, and so do weeks you skip.

Can I turn it into a book later?

In Dawn Light, Export everything in Settings makes one file with every entry as text and PDF, plus the recordings and photos. You can lay that out or print it however you like.

Start the first-year journal

Talk for a minute while the baby sleeps on you. Dawn Light keeps it as a dated entry with photos, and next year On this day brings it back.
