What Voice Memos does well
Voice Memos is free from Apple and records on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, with recordings synced through iCloud to your Mac. On iPhone 12 or later it shows a live transcript as you record, and you can search for any word in your transcripts. It's a strong audio tool, with editing and playback controls built for sound.
- Trim, replace or resume a recording, and save edits as a copy
- Enhance Recording to cut background noise and echo
- Skip Silence and playback speed control
- Folders and favorites to group recordings
- Summarize a transcript with Writing Tools on devices with Apple Intelligence
What a voice journal adds
A journal is about coming back to what you said. A voice journal app keeps each recording as a dated entry with the text up front. You can skim a month in minutes instead of listening to it. A good one adds ways to look back, like a calendar, tags and reminders, and keeps entries private behind a lock.
Voice Memos and Dawn Light side by side
Dawn Light is our voice journal, so we've used it as the example. Voice Memos facts come from Apple's iPhone User Guide and App Store listing, checked in October 2026.

When Voice Memos is enough
- You record a few times a month, not every day
- The sound matters more than the words, as with music, birdsong or a child's voice
- You want to edit, trim or clean up the audio
- You record meetings or lectures you'll search later and never reread
- You want your recordings on a Mac too
When a journal app is worth it
- You want to talk most days and read back a week or a year later
- You want entries grouped by day, with tags you can filter by
- You speak a language Voice Memos doesn't transcribe
- You want a reminder at the same time each day
- You'd like short summaries of what you said
Moving old voice memos into a journal
If you already have memos you'd like in a journal, copy the words across. In Voice Memos, tap a recording, tap the More button, then Copy Transcript. In Dawn Light, tap the pencil at the top of Today to write an entry. Paste the text and add the original date in the first line.
Questions about Voice Memos and voice journals
Can Voice Memos transcribe recordings?
Yes, on iPhone 12 or later, as of October 2026. Apple lists English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. You can watch the transcript while recording, copy it and search it.
Can I keep a journal in Voice Memos?
You can. Make a folder called Journal and record into it each day, and the transcripts become searchable. What you lose is reading by date, tags, photos and a daily reminder, which journal apps are built around.
Is Voice Memos private?
You can lock it, like any app, so it needs Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode to open. Apple says a locked app's content also stays out of search, notification previews and Siri suggestions.
