If you drive, wait until you park
Never pick up or look at your phone while driving. Even a hands-free conversation takes some of your attention, and the road needs all of it. The simple version is two minutes in the parking spot before you go inside. That pause also makes a good line between work and home.
Morning commute: set up the day
- What's the one thing that would make today a good day?
- What am I dreading, and what's the first small step on it?
- Who do I need to talk to today?
- How did I sleep, and how do I feel right now?
Evening commute: leave work at work
- What happened today that I want to remember?
- What's still on my mind, and when will I deal with it?
- What went better than I expected?
- What do I want from this evening?
Talking in public without feeling odd
Wired or wireless earbuds with a microphone let you speak quietly, and to everyone around you it looks like a phone call. Stand at the end of the platform or wait for a quieter car. Walking the last stretch home is often the easiest place to talk. On a packed train, type a few lines instead and talk later.
Tunnels and dead zones
Underground lines and rural roads drop signal. If transcription happens on your phone, a lost signal doesn't matter. Your words still appear as you speak.
A commute journal in Dawn Light
Add the Record an entry control to the Lock Screen or the Action button, and Dawn Light opens straight into a recording. On a walk, say "Record a Dawn Light entry" to Siri. A Live Activity shows the timer, and Pause holds it when your stop comes. On a crowded train, the pencil at the top of Today lets you write an entry instead. With Plus, you can record on Apple Watch as you walk.
Questions about commute journaling
Can I journal with Siri while driving?
It's safer to wait until you park. Laws differ by place. If hands-free voice control is allowed where you are and you use it, keep your eyes on the road and never look at the screen.
What if people can hear me?
Speak low with earbuds, save the private parts for the walk home or type instead. A commute entry can be about plans and logistics, with the personal part later.
How long should a commute entry be?
Two to five minutes is plenty. A short ride is still long enough for one thought.
Talk on the way home
Start a recording from the Lock Screen on the train or on your walk home. Dawn Light writes it down on your iPhone, even in a tunnel.
